Hello and Welcome to Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Hello and welcome. My name is Dr. Mayzik. Today we are discussing sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. These conditions are also commonly referred to as sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs.
As the names suggest, STIs are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. These conditions are very common. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 20 million new STIs occur every year in the United States.
Unfortunately, STIs are even more common in the military. Some research suggests that the rate of STIs in the military is up to three to six times higher than in the civilian population. Young, enlisted service members are especially at risk.
In this program, you can learn about several of the most common sexually transmitted infections, including:
We discuss the symptoms, diagnosis, potential complications, and treatments for each of these conditions.
Our specialists -- Dr. Patel and Dr. Alvarado -- provide their expertise throughout the program.
Keep in mind, there may be terms that you're not familiar with, so please visit the glossary at any time, and be sure to check out the other resources included in this program. Thank you for joining us.
