Dr. Mayzik
Untreated trichomoniasis, or trich, can increase the risk for other problems. Dr. Alvarado, can you tell us more about the potential complications of trich?

Dr. Alvarado
Absolutely, Dr. Mayzik. Even when people with trichomoniasis don't have any symptoms, they can still pass the parasite on to others. Having trich also increases the risk for getting other sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV. Genital inflammation caused by trich can make it easier to get infected with HIV or to pass HIV on to a partner.

Pregnant women with trichomoniasis may also experience complications. Trich can make it more likely for a pregnant woman to go into labor too early, and babies born to infected mothers are more likely to have a low birth weight.
